Beef Farm System Research Technician Jobs Vacancy in Teagasc Jobs Details:

Post Type: Permanent

A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

Location: Animal and Grassland Research and Innovation Centre, Grange, Dunsany, Co. Meath

Reporting To: Beef Enterprise Leader and/or other nominated manager as maybe identified from time to time.

Grade/Salary: Technician, with a starting salary of €28,220 per annum. The current salary scale is €28,220 to €38,373. Starting pay will be at the minimum of the scale as per Government Circular E100/8/82. Exceptional circumstances may apply for candidates with current or previous service in the public sector (including Teagasc).

Remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government Policy.

Basic Function: The person appointed to this position will have a key role in assisting researchers with the beef livestock grazing system research programme at Grange. The successful candidate should be able to work both independently and as part of a team in a variety of capacities including the implantation of experimental farm system experimentation.

Background: The beef industry is of vital national importance to Ireland. Beef accounted for 22% of Agriculture Output and generated foreign earnings of €2,332 million in 2016. Beef production is a significant enterprise on over 94,000 farms and production is spread throughout Ireland. Teagasc plays a key role in developing competitive, profitable and sustainable systems of beef production. Beef systems must maximise the use of grazed grass so as to capitalise on Ireland’s natural competitive advantage in grass production, and to contribute to the high quality, grass-fed reputation of Irish beef worldwide. Teagasc are seeking to appoint a highly qualified and enthusiastic farm system technician to provide support to the beef system research programme at Grange. The successful candidate will work in a variety of capacities including the implantation of farm system experimental protocols which will include grassland management and animal performance measurement plus recording. Grange is part of the Animal & Grassland Research and Innovation Centre in Teagasc and has extensive facilities for field and laboratory research. Teagasc are seeking to recruit a farm system research technician to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with responsibility for supporting the Animal Research programme at Grange.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

 To assist in the design of farm system experimental protocol; including the supervision farm staff and students.

 To layout system experiments using both GPS and conventional technology and to establish experimental treatments as outlined in the experimental protocol.

 To manage farm system experiments ensuring in particular that the treatments are applied and maintained as outlined in the experimental protocol.

 To record all experimental information accurately, carefully and orderly as prescribed in the experimental protocol using either manual or automated recording as appropriate.

 To assemble, check and input all experimental data into suitable database such as AgriNet, PastureBase Ireland, Oracle for further data analysis.

 Undertake animal measurements in relation breeding, calving, growth rate and intake.

 Responsible for heard management including breeding, calving and animal health and welfare.

 Assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service charter and action plan.

 Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of oneself, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes responsibility for health and safety on the farm and full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.

 Actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.

 Carry out such other duties as may be assigned by the Enterprise Leader, Head of Department or Head of Programme from time to time.

Essential Desirable

Qualifications  Candidates must have a Level 6  Number of years’ experience Specific Purpose in Farm Administration in management of a beef and/or a Level 6 Advanced Certificate in herd. Agriculture or a related discipline.

Skills  Beef production systems and farm  Knowledge of the Irish beef computer recording systems industry

Knowledge  Grassland management, beef cattle  Ability to work well with breeding and reproduction, animal animals. health and welfare.

 Ability to critically evaluate the adequacy of methods, protocols and equipment performance.

 Decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Note: The ‘essential’ qualifications, knowledge, skills and behavioural competencies outlined above are ‘must- have’ which will be used in the selection process. The appointee will be required to have a valid full driver’s licence in order to efficiently carry out the duties of the role. Travel and subsistence expenses will be payable, where applicable, in line with Teagasc policy.
